Alkaline vs. alkalized – Which is better?

By now you’ve heard about the numerous types of alkaline water options out there. You may be thinking that the best way to get your hands on some alkaline water are by buying some of the bottled brands out there. That should do the job, right? Wrong! Water can be made alkaline by adding baking soda, minerals, or chemicals to raise its pH. However, alkalized water is created by the process of electrolysis. This is the only water that has been researched by medical scientists and shown to have beneficial health properties. Alkaline waters which are bottled, for example, do NOT possess the same antioxidants as alkalized water. They simply have a higher pH as a result of certain additives. For best results, opt for alkalized water that is microclustered, hydrogen-saturated, and anti-oxidant rich!

5 Turmeric Health Benefits

Organic Turmeric with Squalene Supplement
  1. Curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, is a strong and natural anti-inflammatory. It is now believed that chronic, low-level inflammation is a major contributor to almost every chronic disease experienced in the West, including heart disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer’s as well as various degenerative conditions.
  2. Curcumin is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure. Evidence suggests that oxidative damage is one of the mechanisms that causes aging and age-related diseases. The main reason antioxidants are so beneficial is that they protect our bodies from free radical damage.
  3. Curcumin is linked to improved brain function and a lower risk of brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. Many common brain disorders have been linked to decreased levels of the hormone Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). Curcumin has been shown to effectively increase levels of BDNF in the brain.
  4. Curcumin has been shown to help arthritis. In a study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, curcumin was found to be even more effective than an anti-inflammatory drug. This makes sense, considering that curcumin is such a strong anti-inflammatory.
  5. Curcumin has been shown to have benefits in treating depression. A study in 60 depressed patients showed that curcumin was effective as prozac in relieving the symptoms of depression.

There are a lot of turmeric supplement products available on the market, but it is extremely important to take turmeric that has highly absorbable curcumin. Supplementing with black pepper is just one way to do this, but only Enagic’s UKON Turmeric is naturally even more effective. It is:

Skin toner – what’s the rave?

Skin toners get all the rave for their ability to preserve and tighten skin. Unfortunately, many of these “wonder” products contain chemicals such as parabens, citric acid and potassium sorbate, which act to keep harmful microorganisms from growing in the facial toner and ruining the formula, some of which can not only be harmful and harsh on your skin, but also carcinogenic. Artificial fragrance is also common in facial toners, but the vague term “fragrance” can indicate up to 4,000 separate chemicals (1). The great news is that there’s a safe, clean, and eco-friendly alternative to these popular chemical-laden cosmetic products that you can access straight from your home.

Enagic Kangen water ionizers make a toner water of pH 4.0-6.0, which effectively improves skin tightness, softness, and prevents wrinkles – you might have even heard it was mentioned in Vogue! Unlike nearly any other toner water on the market, this toner naturally contains NO chemicals, fragrances, or additives! The water is created simply by the process of electrolysis, where the tap water from your sink is filtered and then passed through the machine’s platinum electrode plates, where the pH is changed. Because the water has no preservatives, it is best to use it fresh from the machine, but you can also fill a spray bottle with it to take it on the go!

Flush Away Environmental Toxins w/ Kangen Water

It’s no news that we live in a toxic world, where we’re faced with hundreds of dangerous environmental chemicals everyday. According to several studies, long-term exposure to pesticides can increase the risk of developmental and reproductive disorders, can disrupt the immune system, the endocrine system, can impair nervous-system function, and can contribute to the development of certain cancers. Children are at higher risk from exposure than are adults. (1)

Fragrances added to many cleaners, most notably laundry detergents and fabric softeners, may cause symptoms such as respiratory irritation, headache, sneezing, and watery eyes in sensitive individuals or allergy and asthma sufferers. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health discovered that one-third of the substances used in the fragrance industry are toxic. However, because the chemical formulas of fragrances are considered trade secrets, companies aren’t required to list their ingredients – they can simply label them as containing “fragrance.” (2)

Other ingredients in cleaners may have low acute toxicity but contribute to long-term health effects, such as cancer or hormone disruption. Some all-purpose cleaners contain the sudsing agents diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA). When these substances come into contact with nitrites, often present as undisclosed preservatives or contaminants, they form carcinogens that readily penetrate the skin. Neurotoxic chemicals are also present in some cleaners. (2)

Luckily, there are ways to help your body release toxic buildup, though obviously these toxins should be avoided as much as possible. Kangen water, which is alkaline, hydrogen-saturated, and anti-oxidant rich, is an excellent way to help your body do its job of releasing these environmental toxins that accumulate over time. Water adjusts the body’s temperature and, through urination and perspiration, is the primary way to rid the body of toxins. For the body to function properly, it is imperative to be properly hydrated. Drinking Kangen water daily assists the body in flushing out toxic, acidic wastes. You can even taste the difference!

It’s not just about alkaline, it’s about hydrogen!

We’ve all heard about the benefits of alkaline water, but did you know that another key component of water is also how much hydrogen it contains? A study in fact found that the consumption of water containing a high concentration of hydrogen reduced oxidative stress and disease activity in patients who had rheumatoid arthritis. The great news is that Enagic Kangen water is not only alkaline, but also is highly hydrogenated! You won’t find that in most bottled alkaline waters. So, hydrogenation is a key component to being most hydrated, which means better skin, hair, and health! More info and purchasing options here!

Turmeric benefits

As you can see, the list of Turmeric benefits are aplenty. There’s good reason why this potent super herb has gained buzz in the natural wellness and health industry. So, read on below for more Turmeric benefits:

Turmeric provides an abundance of antioxidants capable of supporting cellular health. Here are several of the most well-researched benefits of turmeric.

1. Promotes Balanced Mood

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in the Journal of Affective Disorders showed noticeable and promising results with turmeric for supporting a balanced mood. Two groups were studied over 8 weeks. The first group received curcumin daily, while the other received placebo. After 8 weeks, the depression and anxiety score tests completed by all of the participants showed significant symptom improvements compared to placebo. Could turmeric be a potential new option for stabilizing mood? [3]

2. Helps Wounds Heal Faster

Cut your finger? A study in the Sept 2014 issue of Life Sciences found that turmeric (curcumin) has beneficial properties that appear to speed the wound healing process. These modes of action include the modulation of redness and swelling and oxidation. As new studies come to light showing turmeric’s ability to potentiate the body’s natural healing processes and outcome, the possible breadth of applications could be enormous. [4]

An exciting study in the Oct 2006 issue of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry demonstrated the efficacy of a topical turmeric application for wounds in rats. The results showed that turmeric increased collagen synthesis rates, improved wound contraction, and increased tissue strength and cell proliferation around the wound. Turmeric also showed antioxidant properties that helped the healing process. [5]

3. Helps Soothe Aches and Discomfort

An impressive study completed and published in the March 2014 issue of the Journal of Clinical Interventions in Aging looked at the effect of turmeric on knee osteoarthritis pain and function. In the 4-week study, two groups were randomized and divided; one group received turmeric extract, while the other group received the daily upper limit dose of ibuprofen.

Results showed that the turmeric group experienced discomfort relief just as much as the ibuprofen group. The turmeric group, however, seemed to enjoy more relief from joint stiffness. Those taking turmeric reported significantly less side effects than those taking NSAIDs. [6] A double-blind, placebo-controlled study in the December 2011 issue of Surgical Endoscopy looked at turmeric supplementation on postoperative discomfort and fatigue in patients who had gallbladder surgery. Patients taking turmeric experienced significantly less pain and fatigue (per pain scale log assessments) at intervals of 3 weeks, as compared to placebo. [7]

4. Encourages Balanced Blood Sugar

A novel investigative study published in the Nov 2014 issue of The Journal of Endocrinology looked at the effects of curcumin on the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas called Beta cells (or B-cells) and Islet cells, in relation to type-2 diabetes. Researchers treated B-cell lines and human Islet cells with preparations of turmeric and reported a number of positive benefits. [8]

5. Soothes Irritated Tissue

Turmeric has been shown in studies to be valuable in helping the body modulate and buffer excess irritation. The swelling response is a healthy and natural mechanism the body uses to usher soothing compounds in acute times of crises or repair. It’s believed that most people in today’s toxic, stress-laden environment are under constant inflammatory conditions, and a growing number of experts believe it to be the origin of many diseases.

A review published in the 2007 issue of Advances of Experimental Medicine noted the soothing effect of turmeric is likely exerted through its ability to inhibit inflammatory enzymes including cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), lipoxygenase (LOX), and nitric oxide synthase (NOS), among others. These three are particularly important enzymes that mediate and inform the inflammatory processes, though if poorly regulated can possibly lead to disease. Turmeric shows promise in helping the body adapt and regulate these enzymes. [9] [10]

6. Helps Stiff Joints

A randomized, pilot clinical study was published in the November 2012 issue of Phytotherapy Research. The goal of the study was to see the effectiveness and/or difference in the relief of active joint discomfort. One study group received the standard-of-care medication (diclofenac sodium), while the other received turmeric. Patients were given symptom score sheets (DAS/ACR) to assess results. Turmeric outperformed diclofenac sodium on all levels, including being relatively free from adverse side effects. [11]

7. Cholesterol Optimization

Turmeric’s ability to help the body regulate and balance cholesterol levels has been hypothesized and studied since the 1990s with varying levels of benefits. A couple of these studies show an impressive reduction in lipid profiles and cholesterol markers in turmeric-supplemented groups. One randomized, single-blind clinical study published in the November 2011 issue of Phytotherapy Research set out to investigate turmeric’s effect on cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Group participants were given either turmeric (curcumin) in low or high doses, and a control group was given vitamin E only. After just seven days, the results proved statistically significant. Low-dose turmeric showed the most improvement as compared to the other two groups, with serum cholesterol levels being reduced by 17% and triglycerides being slashed a whopping 47%! [12]

Another study conducted a similar seven day trial. Results showed the turmeric (curcumin) supplemented participants had reduced serum cholesterol by 12%, reduced lipid peroxides (cholesterol byproduct marker) by 33%, and increased HDL cholesterol (the good kind) by an impressive 29%. Most importantly, these studies show that turmeric is consistently safe and has very low risk of side effect. [13]

8. Ulcers

India has long used turmeric in curry dishes as a taste and color enhancer. Another key reason turmeric has been used in so many cultural dishes in the East for millennia is because of its soothing properties on digestion. Researchers wanted to test the protective effects of turmeric on the lining of the stomach against acidic preparations (ethanol) used to induce stomach ulcers in test animals (representative of humans).

A preparation containing the essential oils from turmeric was administered prior to the ethanol and the results were impressive. Turmeric inhibited stomach ulcer formation by an impressive 85%. Lesions, tissue necrosis, and hemorrhaging were also greatly reduced. In addition, turmeric also appears to offer some impressive protection for stomach ailments. [14]

Supplementing with Turmeric

There are a lot of turmeric supplements on the market; some better than others. At minimum, make sure to only purchase organic products from reputable companies. Because turmeric is so popular, there’s no shortage of hucksters out there peddling low quality junk that’s produced under questionable circumstances. If you’re in the market for a turmeric supplement, we now carry a 100% organic ultra-potent organic supplement which you can find here. The feedback on this product has been incredible!

Alkaline water scam: is alkaline water really good for you?

Alkaline water scam: is alkaline water really good for you?

Alkaline water scam: is alkaline water really good for you?

Unveiling the alkaline water scam: you may be wondering if all the recent hype about alkaline water is real and if the plethora of stated benefits of drinking alkaline water are really real. Is alkaline water really all that it’s cracked up to be? Here is the 411:

When referring to alkaline water, the first thing we must clarify is that there is a difference between bottled “alkaline water” and ionized alkaline water. Most bottled “alkaline water” that you find at Whole Foods and other health stores or supermarkets are usually processed with “minerals” so that they simply read as alkaline, and are not actually ionized via electrolysis which is what gives real alkaline water the many health properties that it’s known for.

So, in a way, it’s not the mere pH level of the water that matters when it comes to your health (because, as we know, an alkaline pH can be achieved by simply adding chemicals like lye and other byproducts to tap water so that it doesn’t corrode city pipes.. does it mean that tap water can technically read as alkaline? Yes. Does this mean that tap water is healthy? Not necessarily..). So, there are several very important steps to consider when assessing alkaline water’s benefits, and this comes down to the source and means by which your alkaline water is produced:

Ultimately, to understand how regular alkaline water and ionized alkaline water differ, it’s important to realize that there is a fundamental difference between pH and alkalinity. The most important concept is that water can have an alkaline pH level but vary in its alkalinity. So, what is alkalinity and why is it all the rave?

Alkalinity measures the ability of water to neutralize acids. Alkaline water can have high alkalinity while having only a moderately alkaline pH because, again, alkalinity and pH are not the same thing. If you are trying to balance body pH and reduce acidity in your body, you want water with high alkalinity to neutralize as much acidity as possible.

The difference is that alkaline water made by a water ionizer has antioxidant potential. Bottled alkaline water doesn’t.

The pH (Potential Hydrogen) of water refers to its ability to attract positively-charged Hydrogen ions (H ). The pH levels in your body are maintained within a narrow range by your body and so this is in part why the pH level of your water isn’t as important as its level of alkalinity when it comes to your health. When you’re drinking alkaline water for health, you’re drinking alkaline water for is it’s acid-neutralizing alkalinity and it’s antioxidant potential, which are produced only by high-quality alkaline water ionizers.

What is Ionization and why is it so important? Ionization is the process by which an atom or molecule either gains or loses electrons and thus turns into an ion or “charged particle.”  When an atom transforms into an ion, its electrical charge can be either positive or negative, which depends on whether the atom gained or lost electrons. The minerals in ionized alkaline water – namely calcium, magnesium, and potassium – gain electrons from the ionization process and the surplus of electrons are what give the water a negative electrical charge. The negative electrical charge is what gives ionized alkaline water its antioxidant potential and, thus, its ability to act as a strong antioxidant.

The difference between alkaline ionized water and ionized water is that: water that has been chemically manipulated to read as alkaline with the addition of “minerals” (as the majority of bottled alkaline waters are) does not have the true alkalinity value, micro-clustered ionization properties and antioxidant potential that ionized alkaline water does.

Enagic SD501U Under the Counter Alkaline Water Ionizer

ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) – the benefits of alkaline ionized water produced from an alkaline water ionizer

What’s the difference between regular bottled alkaline water and alkaline water produced by a water ionizer? An alkaline water ionizer gives a negative electrical charge into the water it makes. That negative electrical charge then gives the water antioxidant potential which can be measured just like the charge of a battery. The negative charge is called its ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) and, naturally, the more negative the charge value, the more antioxidant properties the water has.

In-vitro (in the lab) studies have shown that water with a high negative ORP value, when mixed with vitamin C, enhances the antioxidant effect of vitamin C. Naturally, then, you must be thinking that you can mix ionized alkaline water with vitamin C and enhance its properties. This is true and one of the many benefits of drinking ionized alkaline water which has a negative ORP! However, the only problem with the antioxidant potential of alkaline water is that it cannot be stored for long periods of time and is most potent when produced fresh by the water ionizer (hence why any bottled alkaline water, even if ionized, do not have the health benefits of water that has been freshly ionized by an alkaline water ionizer). To be more precise, the antioxidant value of alkaline water begins to decline after about 24 hours so it’s best to be consumed fresh from the source of your water ionizer as it is produced.

Alkaline water scam: is alkaline water really good for you?

Why Bottled Alkaline Water has no Antioxidant Potential, but can have toxic antimony in it

Ultimately, bottled alkaline water has no antioxidant potential because the antioxidant potential does not survive prolonged periods of time. Due to this, the healthiest alkaline water is produced and consumed fresh from a water ionizer. The lack of ORP value is just one issue with bottled alkaline water, though.

Another problem with bottled alkaline water is its possible chemical contamination. BPA, phthalates, and antimony have all been detected in bottled water and are considered as potent hormone disruptors and potential carcinogens. Antimony is a heavy metal and a known carcinogen. Alkaline water actually draws antimony out of plastic, so the antimony contamination will be worse with bottled alkaline water than it is for plain bottled water. Another reason why you want to drink freshly produced alkaline ionized water from an alkaline water ionizer.

Another issue with bottled alkaline water is its financial cost and environmental impact. Investing in a high-quality alkaline water ionizer that is made with medical-grade parts (like this brand) will save you a lot of money down the line. With an alkaline water ionizer in your home, you can produce an unlimited amount of freshly ionized alkaline water at the push of a button and will never have to buy bottled water again! Imagine the time, energy, and money that goes into buying bottled water – and then imagine it eliminated! This is partly why so many people are installing alkaline water ionizers in their kitchens (which are very easy to install and simply fasten to your faucet) and no longer buying expensive bottled water. High-quality alkaline water ionizers (like those made by 40 year old company, Enagic) are built with medical-grade parts and are made to last a lifetime. This means with one single purchase of a water ionizer you will be able to produce an unlimited supply of pure, ionized, alkaline water in your very own home.

Triple the Antioxidant Potential of Vitamin C with Ionized Alkaline Water

A study called Electrolyzed-reduced water protects against oxidative damage to DNA, RNA, and protein tested the effect of mixing ionized alkaline water with Vitamin C. The result was that ionized alkaline water tripled the antioxidant strength of Vitamin C. It’s simple to reap the benefits of this boosted antioxidant benefit with a water ionizer. Simply mix the juice of a lemon, lime, orange or any citrus fruit with alkaline water produced from your water ionizer and drink immediately.
